Program Descriptions

Social Skills – Showing good behavior.  

            Social Skills cover a wide variety of topics such as how to be a great communicator, developing coping skills and vocational readiness.  Social skills are the base of every human interaction. The objective of this program is to teach basic social skills and reinforce the standard of good behavior.

 Programs objectives:

·         To define social skills

·         Everyone will become knowledgeable of social skills and the proper way to use

·         Demonstrate skits, encouraging practicing good social skills

Culture Diversity – Different Lifestyles

            Culture Diversity is a focal point of the program. It’s the differences in race, language, ethnicity, value systems, religion and local cultures that make up various groups in a community. The Diversity program will educate our youth about the makeup of society and how to be open-minded and respectful of the differences of others.

Programs objectives:

·         Define Culture and Diversity 

·         Discuss the importance of cultural respect

·         Demonstrate how different cultures must work together to complete a goal

Team Building – A group achieving a common goal

                 Team building is seen in day-to-day life of an organization and team dynamic can be improved through successful leadership. Team building is displayed in work environments and has its benefits of self-development, positive communication, leadership skill and the ability to work together. 

          Programs objectives:

·         Discuss team, individual and leader

·         Exercise how working as a team can be very effective

·         Key tips that will help a team be effective

Career Ready – Job preparation 

                   Career Ready is having the basic skill set that will increase chances with working in the career field. In today’s workforce environment, most career pathways require some form of post secondary education, whether it’s an entry-level job, a management position for a mid-career professional or perhaps even a shift from practicing a profession to teaching others. A particular job might require a certificate, a two-year degree, a four-year degree, an advanced degree or even a number of courses for a particular trade. 

Programs objectives:

·         Practicing filling out applications

·         Identify the types of jobs and careers that best suit them

·         Tips on having a successful interview

Communication – Transferring Information 

                   Communication is used throughout the world either verbally or non-verbally. Being able to communicate effectively is the most important of all life skills. Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one source to another, whether this be verbally (using voice) written (using printed or digital media such as books, magazines, websites or emails) visually (using logos, maps, charts or graphs) or non-verbally (using body language and gestures. 

         Programs objectives:

·         To discuss and identify the types (transmitter and receiver) and ways (verbal-nonverbal) of communicating

·         Exercise the importance of communication in different activities

·         Discuss the importance of the different ways of communicating  

Peer Pressure – being influenced to do something 

            Your peers are the people with whom you identify and spend time with.  Children, teens and adults may share the same interests and professions. Peer pressure occurs when an individual experiences implied or expressed persuasion to adopt similar values, beliefs, goals, or to participate in the same activities as those in the peer group.

          Programs objectives:

·         Define peer pressure and the types (positive and negative)

·         Peer-Pressure exercise – “Maze of Life” which demonstrates how Positive peer pressure is more effective then Negative peer pressure

·         Skits - demonstrating positive and negative peer pressure amongst the youth 

Goal Setting – Reaching an end point. 

                   Goal Setting is an essential part of becoming an Achiever; it helps create focus and gives the dreamer direction. We dream about where we want to go, but we don’t have a map to get there. We need to do more than simply scribble down some ideas on a piece of paper. Our goals need to be complete and focused, much like a road map. 

 Program objectives:

·         Definition of key terms: goal, plan, short-term goals, long-term, leverage and visualization

·         Skit – illustrating persistence. Explain how to set goals and reach them when you don’t exactly know what you’re after or how to obtain it

·         Everyone will set short term goals that will direct them toward long term goals

Leadership Skills – Guiding and directing  

                   Leadership is what Achievers At Best is all about… not everyone is comfortable with taking on a leadership role, but all can benefit from the building principles offered in this program.

 Programs objectives:

·         Introduce leadership character traits

·         Discuss where leaders are found

·         Discuss the characteristics of a great leader

Poetry/Art – To exercise self imagination 

               In life it’s wonderful that many can appreciate poetry and art. Poetry is art of rhythmical composition; written or spoken. It’s exciting to see how the beauty of one’s imagination transfers from their thoughts for world to see. 

 Program objectives:

·         Discuss the difference between poetry and art

·         Have groups discuss why poetry and art is important

·         Youth working in different groups developing their own poetry and arts
